Home work. Charlie can you write a little in here about the compass.
Try and comment on all the numbered areas above.
Remember to write something about the compass points and degrees.
Don't worry about completing all of this task as we can do some more work on it in another session.

Navigation : Reciprocal bearings

Reciprocal Bearings

Today we practiced reciprocal bearings.
A reciprocal bearing is the opposite bearing to the one you are on. i.e South is a reciprocal bearing of North and East is a reciprocal bearing of West. In terms of bearings, reciprocal bearings always have a difference of 180 degrees to the original bearing.
Today, we went to the wood and headed off on a bearing away from our starting point, we then made sure I was suitably lost, then it was my task to find my way back to the starting point by following a reciprocal bearing.

Getting the Bike ready for work

Before starting bike work I put the bike on the stand. Usually when I work on a bike, I suspend the bike from it's seatpost. It is necessary to set the stand to the correct position before hanging the bike on it . It is necessary to grip the bike at the downtube with one hand and the seat tube with the other when lifting it onto the bike rack. When hanging a bike, make sure you hang it with the chain ring facing  you.

Hanging a bike from the top tube because the seat post is rusted into the seat tube.

A typical bike tool set.

After the bike is secure on the bike rack, it is necessary to collect all the tools you may need .

Preparing for work

When I go to work at the bike shop I first need to make sure that I am ready to work.

This involves;
  • Putting my boots on
  • Apply barrier cream or wear gloves
  • Put on a work jacket

Charlie's Birthday

On my 23rd birthday, I went go-karting with Alistair and Robin.
My fastest lap was 20.195 seconds, this was my fastest ever lap time Robin set the fastest lap of our session with 17.616 seconds. We then went to Bicycle Repair Man in Prudhoe to buy my new bike.
I enjoyed today's session very much.

We saw some sculptures

We saw this stage, although we never found out what it is used for, I imagined it was either for music concerts or theatre performances.
On my bike ride with mum, we saw these water fountains, I thought they were interesting to look at.
Apart from my bike ride, I went to the Vincent Van Gogh museum, I thought that was very interesting.

I thought Amsterdam was very interesting and I enjoyed my time there.

New Bike research

We got the train to Prudhoe, then went to The Bicycle Repair Man shop  and looked at bikes.
There are three types of bike that we looked at : Mountain, Road and Hybrid.

Mountain Bike : The purpose of a mountain bike is to enable the rider to cycle over rough terrain.
The tyres are big with deep tread, mountain bikes have got straight handlebars so that the rider has more control, the frame of a mountain bike is bigger and stronger than a road bike. Mountain bikes often have suspension to help you go over bumps.

.
Road Bike : Road bikes usually have different shaped handle bars to mountain bikes , they are designed to reduce the wind resistance. The tyres on a road bike are thinner than mountain bikes and have very little tread, the frames of a road bike are less bulky and less robust than a mountain bike.
Road bikes usually don't have suspension.

Hybrid Bike: Hybrids are designed to be somewhere between a mountain bike and a road bike. The tyres are not as thin as a road bike but not as thick as a mountain bike and have some tread. Often they have straight handlebars and sometimes have front suspension. The frame on a hybrid bike is more robust than a road bike but less robust than a mountain bike.

I have chosen to buy a mountain bike because the majority of my riding will be on rough tracks with some riding on road. I also aspire to cycle on some red routes.
